6:30am The sun was just barely peeking out from the mountain tops. I made a face and stared at my ceiling. Its the first day of school, my first class was at 9:30am. I shut my eyes and tried to rest my head, but a few minutes of tossing and turning I came to the conclusion that I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. I got up and sluggishly got ready for the day of learning ahead of me.
All dressed up with no where to go. I decided that I was just going to have to be an hour early. I wrapped my coat around my body and shouldered my backpack. The sun was now almost half way across the sky. Although the sun was shining dimly through the clouds the air was bitter cold. I folded my arms tightly across my chest to keep the warmth close to me as I walked across the street to join the growing crowd at the shuttle stop.
We were a very quiet group as we all waited of the shuttle to come. Everyone's eyes drooped from not getting enough sleep the previous night. Finally after 10 minutes of waiting the little shuttle pulled up to the station. The seats faced each other. Awkward.
I sat close to the back and put my earphones in my ear after hearing the evil country music playing over the radio. I looked down at my Ipod the whole ride to avoid awkward eye contact from awkward people on the awkward shuttle.
The whole situation was just AWKWARD!
When the torture was over with a few minutes later when we arrived at the campus I got off the shuttle with a sigh of relief. I had survived, and if I could survive that I could survive anything. The cold air rush up to meet me and made my skin tingle and my glasses to fog. I walked with the flow until we reached the Union building and then I thought I should probably find out where my first class was. I swung my backpack around to the front of me and unzipped the first pocket where my map was. I looked at the highlighted buildings, Anthropology was is the Social Science building. My shoulder slumped forward and my bottom lip pushed out in a put. It was across campus.
Well if the Fellowship of the Ring could walk across Middle Earth, I could walk across campus.
I swung my backpack back and readied myself for the long walk.
I was crawling on my hands and knees when I finally got to the classroom for Anthropology.
Victory my name is Markee!
I then looked down at my phone. 8:30am.
Are you kidding me? Does time move slower here?
I look around for a place to sit and wait for an hour. Blue chairs lined the wall on the other side of an open classroom door. I sit cautiously expecting the seats to be as hard as rocks, but instead of rocks it was like sitting on a feather pillow.
I twiddled my thumbs. Now what? I had left my book back in the dorm thinking I wasn't going to need it. Well I did.
To pass the time I looked out the windows in front of me and people watched.
Old crazy man
Young crazy man
Nerd
Geek
Woah hey look! I found Waldo!
Witch lady
Man in a dress or is the a woman? I can't tell.
Another crazy old man.
I was so busy people watching I didn't notice the man standing beside me.
"How do ye do, matey," he asked
I look up at none other then CAPTAIN BARBOSSA!
"I'm good, capt'n," I reply.
"Well you have a good day," he said.
His tall leather boots slightly squeaked as he walked away down the hall, and the feather on his hat waved to me. Jack was sitting on his shoulder looking back at me. He screeched and bounced up and down until the pirate captain was out of view.
I was still in shock when a young man with a handsome face approached me.
"Excuse me, do you know where building WB is," he asked me.
"Um, no," I said and he began to turn away, "but I can check!"
He turned back to me and I pulled out my handy dandy map with a flourish.
I opened it up and found the building.
"It is just across from here," I said pointing at the building outside.
"Thank you," he said, "could I take a picture of your map?"
"Yeah," I held of the map for him as he took the picture.
"You are a lifesaver," the handsome man said with a dazzling grin and turned to go to his class.
At 9:30 my own class started Dr. Holt came in and looked down at us with a hard look.
"I am your enemy," he started, "this is a real college class, and I'm going to be a real mercenary."
After we were released from the odd class I made my way across the street to the Institute building. I found Brother Buhrley's classroom and took a seat. He talked about what we were learning this semester and everything that was going on.
I left that class feeling happy and refreshed just like you always do after seminary or church. On my way to the Union building to eat lunch the man to my right turned to me.
"Hi I'm Charles," he said holding out his hand.
I shook it, "I'm Markee."
"Is this your first day,"
"Yeah."
"Well good luck," he said turning to go into a building, "it was nice to meet you!"
"You too."
The crowded Union building was a very lonely building to eat lunch in if you don't have any friends.
I talked to the woman from Mexico sitting by me as we ate. She told me about her children and her job. Gloria was her name. She was very kind and I enjoyed hearing about her life.
I left soon after to go to my last class of the day. College Success. In total there are only 14 students in the class and so we all said our names and something we like to do so we could get to know each other. Ashley Owens, the professor of the class asked us each a question about our selves as we introduced ourselves.
The time was up and I was so glad that school was over for the day. It was a good day but I was ready to be home and rest. And rest I did.
Part 2 coming soon!
Captain Barbosa? Really? I thought this was a true story . . .;) I like the handsome man part.
